The Grass Is Greener on the Other Side

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
(2 Corinthians 5:1-5)

We tend to look around us and think that our circumstances should be better. We aren’t good enough. Our job isn’t good enough. Our town isn’t good enough. Our friends and family aren’t good enough. Our church community isn’t good enough. Our stuff isn’t good enough. We listen to the devil’s sweet lies and start to desire other things. But “better” people or things never bring contentment; no matter where we stand, we are always tempted to look elsewhere. The root of the problem is that we are living in a fallen world. The grass, in fact, is greener on the other side; we just consistently fail to properly identify the other side. The devil has shifted our perspective, turning our eyes to the things of this world. God wants us to look to Him, to focus our eyes on the heavenly realms. We long for justice, for peace, for comfort, for rest, for joy, and for love. And there isn’t another place or people in our world that will bring this to us. The kingdom of heaven is the answer to our longings, and God placed this healthy longing in our hearts for good reason. Seek and nurture the kingdom now, and find contentment in knowing that your eternal dwelling is safe and secure. One day we will stand in the green grass on the other side of the fence.
